34 Rules of Golf


There are only 34 basic Rules of Golf, but they are complicated by numerous clauses and sub-clauses, as well as "Etiquette", "Definitions", the "Rules of Amateur Status" and many other sections of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club Rules of Golf.

And if that's not enough for you, there is the "Decisions on the Rules of Golf", with more than 1,200 entries to while away your winter evenings by the fire.

Over the past 52 weeks we have tried to focus the attention of members to the more basic rules of golf in an attempt to create “rules and protocol awareness” within the club and membership; thus making your round more enjoyable and in turn, embracing the culture and etiquette of the game, recognition of fellow players and playing partners.

The weekly rules segment is taking an indefinite break; rulings and comment will always be available via contact with the Club Vice Captain~Christine Alexander (  There may also be a guest appearance from time to time, remember knowing the rules can actually lower your score.

We trust you have enjoyed the various articles and continue to reference the 34 Golf Rules Archive that we have setup, as we have examined and covered many of the common golf rules breaches and misunderstandings.


It all sounds so easy; "The object of the game is to complete what is known as a hole by playing a ball from the teeing ground into the hole on the putting green in the fewest possible number of strokes.  A "round of golf' consists of playing 18 such holes"
